Could Blood Pressure Drugs Raise The risk of COVID-19?

Could Blood Pressure Drugs Raise The risk of COVID-19?

Mice treated with an ACE inhibitor (blood pressure medication) showed raised levels of ACE2. But, mice that received both an ACE inhibitor and a different blood pressure medicine known as an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) did not exhibit the raise.
SARS-CoV-2 binds to a cellular receptor known as angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) before entering a cell and replicating.
Based on these findings, we recommend that researchers analyze existing and ongoing clinical studies to determine whether people on ACE inhibitor-ARB combination therapy show different COVID-19 susceptibility, complications and outcomes than patients taking only an ACE inhibitor or ARB medication, said Steven Brooks, PhD, a post-doctoral research fellow in the Ackerman laboratory. ....

Blood pressure levels were higher in transgender males, and lower in transgender females
The study underscores the importance of monitoring blood pressure and preventive screening measures in transgender patients
In transgender men and women, the gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) is linked to blood pressure changes, said physician-researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). The study appears in Hypertension, a journal of the American Heart Association.
There are many important gaps in clinicians knowledge about the effects of hormone therapy for transgender people, said senior author Michael S. Irwig, MD, Director of Transgender Medicine at BIDMC. Our study sought to address these gaps by recruiting a racially and ethnically diverse pool of participants to examine the time course and magnitude of the ....

Wearable brand Fitbit is searching if it can measure blood pressure with a new study for Sense smartwatch users.
Fitbit Sense comes with electrodermal activity (EDA) to measure daily stress and comes with a heart rate tracker, electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor and skin temperature sensors.
According to 9To5Google, Fitbit Labs is launching a blood pressure study this month to potentially measure Pulse Arrival Time (PAT), or the time it takes for a pulse of blood to reach your wrist after your heart beats .
The company wants to explore the potential link to tracking blood pressure and needs a wider data set, the report said. ....

Blood Pressure Medications may Alter Heart Disease Risk in HIV Patients

Blood Pressure Medications may Alter Heart Disease Risk in HIV Patients

Choice of blood pressure drugs linked to risk of heart disease, stroke, and heart failure
HIV patients need heightened attention to their elevated risk of heart disease
Choice of blood pressure medications was found to influence the long-term risk of heart
disease, stroke and heart failure in people with HIV, revealed study published in Hypertension, an American Heart Association journal.
We suspected there could be differences in risk based on which medications providers select to treat hypertension among people with HIV due to potential interactions between blood pressure medications and some therapies used to treat the virus. Additionally, factors such as how the body handles salt, inflammation and the accelerated aging of blood vessels may affect the risk of cardiac events in people with HIV differently ....
