Fort Bliss investigating Army sergeant’s death; it’s the 2nd on-post soldier death in recent weeks
FORT BLISS, Texas U.S. Army leaders at Fort Bliss said Sunday they were investigating the death of a non-commissioned officer, the second soldier to die unexpectedly on the post in recent weeks.
Staff Sgt. John D.S. Bailey, 27, was pronounced dead by emergency services personnel on Thursday in his on-post residence, the Army said in Sunday s statement.
The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation, the statement added.
Army investigators haven t revealed the cause of Graham s death, but have maintained there was no foul play involving the North Carolina native who was a human resource specialist assigned to her first duty post at Bliss. ....

Below is the script of South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem’s 2021 State of the State Address as prepared for delivery January 12, 2021.
 
Lieutenant Governor Rhoden, Mr. Speaker, members of the Legislature, Chief Justice Jensen, Justices of the Supreme Court, constitutional officers, and fellow South Dakotans, it is my privilege to stand before you today (Jan. 12, 2021) to discuss the state of our state.
The year 2020 was one for the history books. We faced some incredible challenges in South Dakota. We met this adversity head on. And the PEOPLE of South Dakota deserve all the credit.
People struggled, they lost loved ones, and their livelihoods were threatened. But they never lost hope. They were resilient. ....

Noem recognizes achievements of people from central South Dakota during State of the State Address

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem recognized a handful of individuals or groups from central South Dakota during her State of the State Address today (Jan. 12, 2021).
One of those groups is Dr. Darrell Plumage and his team. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Noem said the group turned their attention from the clinic to acute COVID care– including at the Avantara Pierre facility where every single resident is considered high-risk.

Of the 53 residents, 52 tested positive for the virus, after a staffer unknowingly brought it into the facility. But like so many other long-term care facilities, the residents weren’t the only issue – half the staff tested positive as well. At times, Dr. Plumage and his team ended up working around the clock. During one stretch, some staff worked 12-hour days for 22 days straight. Despite being understaffed and overworked, this team was determined to handle the acute care needs of thes ....

An Army soldier has become the third active-duty U.S. service member to die from COVID-19.
Sgt. 1st Class Lisa Maria Soto, 38, an instructor with Alpha Company, 244th Quartermaster Battalion, at Fort Lee, Virginia, died Jan. 2 at a hospital in Hopewell, Virginia, not far from the base.
A 20-year veteran, Soto completed two combat deployments to Iraq in 2005 and Afghanistan in 2011 and spent time as an armorer with the 95th Police Battalion in Mannheim, Germany, in the early 2000s. ....

A Fort Lee instructor is the 15th service member, 2nd active-duty soldier, to die from COVID-19

Sgt. 1st Class Lisa Maria Soto, 38, died Saturday at a civilian hospital near post, Fort Lee spokesman Jefferson Wolfe said.
“Soto served honorably in the Army for more than 20 years, beginning as an armorer at the 95th Military Police Battalion from 2001 to 2004 in Mannheim, Germany,” Wolfe said, with a deployment to Iraq in 2004 and another to Afghanistan in 2011.
At the time of her death, Soto was an advanced individual training instructor with the 244th Quartermaster Battalion, teaching future unit supply specialists, where she had been working since September 2017. ....
