Those measures include permanently expanding mail-in voting, ramping up the number of early voting centers and making voting materials more accessible to students and military voters – far cries from the restrictive voting measures being put in place by other states.

How the Student and Military Voter Empowerment Act can help Maryland voters

The bill aims to make voting more accessible for students and military members.
There is not universal easy access to the vote. There are too many hoops and hurdles to jump through. Government websites and bureaucracy are a pain to navigate with confusing language and endless rabbit holes. Casting a ballot on Election Day is a burden, with busy schedules and long waiting times. And many elected officials are trying to make it even harder now, introducing 165 bills seeking to restrict voting rights across the country. Now add the challenge of being a new voter.
In 2020, national voter turnout under the age of 29 was between52-55% compared to 66.7% among all eligible voters. In 2018, only 54% of Marylanders aged 18-24 were registered to vote, compared to 66% of all Marylanders over the age of 18.
