Unique greenhouse planned for west Erie's Little Italy neighborhood

The Sisters of St. Joseph Neighborhood Network is ready to step up its urban agriculture game thanks to a crucial assist from the Erie Zoning Hearing Board.
The nonprofit neighborhood organization plans to construct a 1,000-square-foot, largely underground greenhouse in the 400 block of West 19th Street in Erie’s Little Italy neighborhood, where a dilapidated single-family house once stood.
The Neighborhood Network, which serves impoverished neighborhoods in east and west Erie, acquired the property in 2020 and had the house demolished.
Plans call for what’s known as a walipini greenhouse on the site. It is an underground greenhouse with a transparent or translucent roof that is naturally heated and cooled by the earth. ....

Erie developers advance housing plan that concerns neighbors

Chester Vendetti and his brother Richard are pushing forward with their plan to create a new housing development on 40 wooded acres in southeast Erie that they have owned for more than three decades a plan opposed by many of the surrounding neighbors.
Vendetti told the Erie Times-News last week that, with the help of Erie real estate agent Mark Graham, he intends to begin the first phase of the project this year: constructing at least 14 single-family homes on the property near East 35th Street and Bird Drive.
As many as 74 homes are planned as part of a multi-phase project that would be built over several years, said Graham, of Bay City R.E. Ltd. ....
