KARACHI: The under-invoicing of tyres is causing the government a loss of billions of rupees annually, a statement said on Thursday.
The unrealistic import trade price along with large-scale smuggling are the biggest obstacles to investment in the local tyre industry, it added.
Industry sources said the annual consumption of tyres in Pakistan is 10 million, of which 20 percent consumption is met by locally-manufactured tyres, while 15 percent of tyres are imported.
The remaining 65 percent of the demand is met by smuggled tyres. Chinese tyres dominate the Pakistani tyre market and accounted for 80 percent of the imports. It is to be estimated, these tyres are up to 25 percent under-invoiced. ....

Philippines: Republic Cement has said that it expects the cement sector in the Philippines to grow strongly in 2021 following a 10% decline in demand in 2020. Speaking to local press, the company’s president and chief executive officer Nabil Francis said that the drop in demand in 2020 was actually less severe than the expected 15%. He added, “We strongly believe that we will get back to 2019 level in 2021. That means 12% growth compared to 2020.” Francis added that the industry is expected to sell 35Mt of cement during 2021. The main driver is the bagged cement segment, with infrastructure and the non-residential, likely to grow less rapidly. ....

Govt allows import of medical devices like oxygen canister for 3 months

The government on Thursday allowed import of 17 medical devices for three months with mandatory declarations immediately after custom clearance and before sale of such products in the domestic market.
To meet rising demand in the ongoing pandemic, the government has allowed import of medical devices like nebulizer, oxygen concentrators, oxygen cannister, oxygen cylinders, oxygen generators and ventilators.
An order in this regard has been issued by the Food and Consumer Affairs Ministry.
Government under the leadership of PM@ Narendra Modiji permits importers of medical devices for making mandatory declarations required under Legal Metrology Rules, 2011 after custom clearance and before sale, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted. ....
