Home affairs gets interdict against protesting undertakers

The department of home affairs has obtained an interdict at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria barring funeral undertakers from shutting down the department’s offices.
The interim interdict was obtained against the unification task team (UTT) – an umbrella body of protesting undertakers, UTT chairperson Thokozani Dladla, secretary-general Kgomotso Langa and spokesperson Muzi Hlengwa.

NATIONAL NEWS - According to the health department spokesperson Popo Maja, the aforementioned burial practices, including wearing of full PPE by funeral directors and sanitising the graves and clothes of people attending funerals are unnecessary.
Maja said the department has on January 26 held a meeting with interested and affected parties in management of human remains to discuss issues pertaining to management of human remains that died of Covid-19.
These parties included the Federations and Associations of Funeral Undertakers and Parlours, funeral undertakers, funeral parlours, provincial managers of Environmental Health, provincial coordinators of Forensic Pathology Services, Municipal Health Services managers, Environmental Health practitioners and National Department of Health directorate. ....

Family tribute to stalwart of the Belcoo community


Well known Belcoo man Jim Conway will be remembered as someone who was a “friend to everyone”.
The 87 year old passed away from Covid-19 at the South West Acute Hospital on January 17 and his daughter Ciara spoke about the man who was such an integral part of the community in Belcoo for decades.
Born in 1933 in Cookstown, Jim’s family moved to Belcoo in 1936 after his family bought a business known as Kelly’s Hotel.
His education was gained at Belcoo Primary School, a year at St. Michael’s College, Enniskillen before he went to St. Mary’s Boarding School, Dundalk where he completed his Leaving Cert. ....

Leading funeral homes in the Eastern Cape are running out of coffins as funerals are held every day of the week due to Covid-19.
The demand for bigger coffins has risen rapidly due to a growing number of overweight or obese people succumbing to the virus.
Avbob says it has converted shipping containers into mobile mortuaries to meet the demand at 19 branches across South Africa.
Leading funeral homes in the Eastern Cape are running out of coffins as funerals are being held every day of the week, as opposed to once a week, due to rising Covid-19 death rate. ....
