Over 1.57 lakh electors added to Chennai's final electoral rolls

As many as 40,513 names deleted because of relocations, deaths and repetition
The Chennai District Election Office has deleted 40,513 electors from the rolls and included 1.57 lakh names ahead of the Assembly elections this year.
Many of the electors deleted from the rolls of 16 Assembly constituencies have been evicted and resettled in neighbouring districts in the past few months. A total of 12,032 electors in five Assembly constituencies of Villivakkam, Anna Nagar, Harbour, Chepauk- Thiruvallikeni and Thousand Lights were shifted to Perumbakkam after demolition of slums along the Cooum.
As many as 13,335 names were deleted following their deaths in the past few months. A total of 2,474 were deleted because of repetition. ....

Voters Excluded from NRC Can Vote in Assam Assembly Polls, Says CEC Sunil Arora

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora on Wednesday said those excluded from Assam s updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) can vote in the assembly polls likely to be held in April-May if their names are on the final electoral rolls.
The updated NRC under the direct supervision of the Supreme Court was released on August 31, 2019. The list excluded the names of 19,06,657 persons. A total of 3,11,21,004 names were included out of 3,30,27,661 applicants.
The CEC cited a Union Home Ministry notification of August 29, 2019 that clarified that the exclusion of a person s name from the NRC does not amount to his or her declaration as a foreigner. Since the people, excluded in the NRC, have their names in the final voters list, they can exercise their franchise in the elections, he told the media. ....

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) K. Vijayanand said that there is an increase of 0.90% over the draft electoral roll published on November 16, 2020 under the Special Summary Revision (SSR)- 2021 of electoral rolls. The final electoral rolls were published on Friday.
In a statement on Friday, the CEO said that the total general electors in the draft rolls were 4,00,79,025. However, as part of the SSR exercise, 4,25,860 inclusions (1.06%) and 63,507 deletions (0.16%) had taken place, resulting in a net increase of 3,62,353 electors, constituting 0.90%, over the draft electoral rolls, he said. ....
