The Eureka Springs City Council on Monday night approved a much-debated ordinance regarding the use of face masks in the city.
Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson lifted the statewide mask mandate two weeks ago, saying that many entities, including businesses, government offices and schools, would make their own decisions about requiring masks to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Mayor Butch Berry said on Monday night that the number of those infected with the virus is going down locally but other regions of the country are seeing a surge in cases.

I think thats because people are taking this real lightly and were not doing whats supposed to be done and should be done, Berry said. A lot of people, for whatever reason, are not getting their vaccinations and so I think this is important, at least on a temporary basis, that we continue having some sort of regulation supporting . wearing masks in our city. ....

The Eureka Springs public works department has plans to upgrade its facilities.
During a tour of the public works facilities on Wednesday, Feb. 24, Mayor Butch Berry said the city has had plans for a new maintenance building for a couple of years now. Berry said the building would be twice the size of the maintenance building located at 3174 E. Van Buren and would be located on a lot behind it. ....

Local News: Eureka Springs council OKs sidewalk, bike path study (3/2/21)

The Eureka Springs City Council is showing support for a proposal to add sidewalks and bike paths to Pivot Rock Road and East Mountain Street.
Council member LauraJo Smole presented the proposal at the councils most recent meeting, on Monday, Feb. 22. Smole suggested appointing a committee including planning commission members to conduct a feasibility study. From there, Smole said, the committee would present its findings to the council. Smole also suggested including a representative from the Eureka Springs City Advertising and Promotion Commission on the committee.
There s possibilities that they have some monies we might be able to access, Smole said. ....
