THE next Ilkley History Hub zoom meeting will be a presentation and discussion about Cunliffe Road, once overpassed by a railway viaduct.
Alex Cockshott, of Ilkley Local History Hub said: “Cunliffe Road is a street which has seen many changes. It was named for the Cunliffe family. A roller skating rink opened in 1876 and there was a cricket field on the other side and the gardens of the Lister’s Arms. Houses began to be built and then the Skipton railway line came across it in the 1880s.
“More shops were built towards The Grove, evolving into the well known Mortens of today. Over the twentieth century there have been several changes of shops, the first Oxfam in Ilkley being there. ....

The invitation is being made by Ilkley Local History Hub, which is part of Ilkley Civic Society.
A spokeswoman said: At the start of May 1861 John Shuttleworth started to produce a weekly Ilkley Gazette newspaper. His family continued to work from their shop Gothic House on Brook Street until 1920. From 1868/9 the Ilkley Gazette was published every week. John and one of his sons Ernest were photographers documenting the changes in Ilkley from the 1860s.

Ilkley history hub

THE next Ilkley Local History Hub meeting takes place on Saturday, February 27.
It will be held as a Zoom meeting and will start at 2.45pm for 3pm. The main topic under the spotlight will be the continued discussion on Brook Street, Ilkley.
There will be a short presentation on how the street has developed in the twentieth century, followed by discussion.
To register for the event email localhistory@civicsociety.ilkley.org and organisers will issue a link to access the meeting.

From village to spa town - the changing face of Ilkley

VERY different views of the same street show just how much Ilkley changed in the 19th and 20th centuries.
From a 1830s etching of Brook Street to two mid-twentieth century shots we can see how the area evolved from a village to a bustling spa town.The images, from the Ilkley Local History Hub, show a dramatic transformation over more than 100 years.
The early etching looks north down Brook Street and shows small bridges over an open brook which flows from Corn Mill Gill down to the River Wharfe on the eastern side of the street. The carriage way was on the western side. ....
