Protection from COVID-19-related lawsuits may be on the way for Illinois businesses through House Bill 3003.
Known as the COVID-19 Liability Act, the legislation was filed Feb. 18 in the House of Representatives. If passed, the bill would offer businesses protection from people claiming they were infected at a business and therefore the business is liable for medical costs, pain and suffering or more.
Clark Kaericher, vice president of Government Affairs at the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, says there so far have been two crises coming from the coronavirus: a public health crisis and an economic crisis. ....

Gov. J.B. Pritzker gave his State of the State address on Wednesday, outlining a leaner $41.6 billion budget for 2022.
“I began working on next year’s budget by taking executive action to make cuts this year that will have the least impact on services while preventing the need for additional revenue from hardworking families, eliminating $700 million in spending in fiscal year 2021 alone,” Pritzker said in a pre-recorded address made available online. “The general funds budget I present … for fiscal year 2022 spends $1.8 billion less than FY 2021. Although several Jacksonville business owners say they are taking a Jan. 1 increase in the state’s minimum wage in stride, there is growing concern about how much pandemic-strained small businesses can handle.
The minimum wage rose to $11 an hour at the start of the new year. It was the third hourly increase sine Jan. 1, 2020, as the state aims for $15 an hour by 2025.
Because the increases are in stages, some business owners said they were able to plan ahead. ....
