The Village of Elkhart, Illinois
Elkhart is celebrating nature and plants at a new exhibit located along Route 66. A ceremony along with a day of family friendly activities is being planned Saturday, June 12.
A new “Elkhart Monarch Flyway” Native Plant and Pollinator Habitat, is located at the corner of Historic Route 66 and Governor Oglesby Street in Elkhart, and  will open to the public after a brief ceremony at 9:45 a.m.  Saturday, June 12.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. several activities are scheduled in the Village.  At the Flyway, enjoy a tour of the native plants and an opportunity to receive a free Native Plant Kit (while supplies last).  Also at the habitat location, there will be a photo opportunity with a giant six foot monarch butterfly.  The event will encourage attendees to experience a different opportunity – involving nature and plants - on Illinois’ Route 66 Scenic Byway and the Route 66 Mo ....

Roadside mowing resumes across Illinois

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that roadside mowing has resumed statewide. IDOT again this year is scheduling mowing to maintain and grow pollinator habitat. In recent years, IDOT has revised its mowing practices to help create and maintain habitat for pollinators, including the endangered rusty patched bumble bee and the monarch butterfly, the official state insect of Illinois.
“We are committed to protecting the environment in the work we do every day, but ask for the public’s cooperation by giving workers their distance,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “By combining well-defined vegetation management with mowing cycles that preserve sightlines and maximize safety, we can make a positive impact today and for future generations.” ....

The Illinois Department of Transportation has resumed seasonal mowing, while maintaining a commitment to help maintain and grow pollinator habitat.
SPRINGFIELD The Illinois Department of Transportation has resumede roadside mowing operations statewide, requiring drivers to slow down, avoid all distractions and proceed with caution when encountering equipment and personnel.
Keeping with its commitment to help the environment, agriculture and economy, IDOT again is scheduling mowing to maintain and grow pollinator habitat.

Making monarchs more sustainable

What is your first memory of butterflies? When you think of butterflies, do you picture a monarch? How would you feel knowing there are 90% fewer monarchs now than there were in the 1990s? Unfortunately, this is true, and in December 2020 they became a candidate under the Endangered Species Act, meaning monarchs meet the definition of an endangered species, ( listing.is warranted ) but they are not currently being protected.
Each monarch weighs as little as a paperclip. It takes four or five generations of these butterflies to fly up from mountain forests in Mexico every spring to as far north as Canada. By late summer, a single super generation emerges to travel the entire 2,500 miles back to Mexico for overwintering. They lay their eggs ....
