The UN Environment Assembly was virtually hosted last week by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. It was preceded two weeks earlier by the Climate Adaptation Summit, virtually hosted by the Dutch port city of Rotterdam.
Taking part in both, I couldn’t but wonder whether resorting to virtual meetings via cyberspace could lead to a fait accompli imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, where people accept restrictive measures as the new normal? In reality, these largely successful meetings, in which thousands participated from all over the world, were made possible by adapting to a grave situation. They allowed a breathing space while work on finding fundamental solutions that address the causes of the problem, not its symptoms, continued. ....

The COVID-19 pandemic is drawing young people around the world into the fight against climate change, as witnessed this week during the Youth Environment Assembly.
The gathering, which is being held virtually, as part of the UN Environment Assembly, is the planet’s largest youth-led environmental event. It has zeroed in on climate change, which participants described as a dire threat to the planet.

UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Youth Environment Assembly (YEA) 2021

Application Deadline: February 3rd 2021
Global Youth Environment Assembly is the official youth forum toward the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN Environment Assembly (UNEA). The first YEA of 2021 will take place on 12, 13 and 18, 19, 20 February in lead the up to UNEA 5.1.
The Assembly will comprise sessions on variety of environmental topics, interactive segments, regional and thematic breakouts, dedicated plenary sessions and a high-level segments featuring dialogues between environment ministers and youth.

The main objective of the Youth Environment Assembly is to provide a self-organised space for training and capacity building for youth participating at UNEA 5.1. YEA, will be a conference which is organised and run by youth and for youth. ....
