Three years after concluding an investigation into Ministry of Social Services oversight in the cases of children placed in the care of family, Saskatchewan’s Advocate for Children and Youth is in the process of conducting another.
According to Advocate Lisa Broda’s 2020 report, her office launched an investigation last fall into children in the care of “persons of sufficient interest” usually extended family suffering from abuse.

“We have had several cases where children have been injured or died in PSI care over the years, and more recently, in the last year we have had a few cases,” Broda said. “So we’ve started to look at that in a more broader way.” ....

Homicide or manslaughter charges were laid in the deaths of nine children in Saskatchewan last year more than in the previous seven years combined.
Four of those children were aged five or younger and one had been in the care of the Ministry of Social Services at the time of their death.
