AAUW Naperville hosts program and movie on paid leave in Illinois May 15 Robert Bruno, professor and director of the University of Illinois Labor Education Program
Updated 5/7/2021 8:56 PM The United States is the only industrialized country without a federal paid leave law. That s right, zero weeks of paid leave is what the U.S.A. offers in comparison to other countries, some of which offer up to a year of paid leave. While many may be familiar with the Family Medical Leave Act, which is unpaid, and the use of paid sick days for our own sickness or after childbirth, most workers do not have access to pay when they are not at work for their own illness, after childbirth or adoption, after their partner has a child, or when they must care for a family member.

There’s 763 of them exactly, and they are in place to bring awareness to Child Abuse Prevention Month this month. Holding Hope founder and president Sarah Labadie says child abuse is normally an uncomfortable topic to talk about. “The pinwheel is this child-like and positive vibe and it just kind of reminds us of the childhood we want for all children,” Labadie said. “We wanted to demonstrate, recognize and just bring awareness to the amount of people who actually experience childhood abuse.”
REGINA A Regina-based organization is raising awareness for child abuse prevention this April by decorating the front of Regina’s City Hall with hundreds of blue pinwheels. Holding Hope was founded by Sarah Labadie in 2019 after she came forward about her own experience of child abuse. “One of the things I was thinking about was what could have been done to make my situation better, like by my peers, my teachers and just everyone around me,” Labadie said. “So one of our main focuses is making people aware of the issue, but also making people aware of what they can do to help.”
