NC Senate fails to override Roy Cooper's veto of school reopening bill

Associated Press
RALEIGH  The North Carolina Senate failed to override Gov. Roy Cooper s veto of legislation that would demand K-12 districts offer in-person learning to all students in about two weeks.
Senate leader Phil Berger said earlier his chamber was prepared to hold an override vote Monday evening. An override would have had to be successful in both chambers for the measure to become law.
Sen. Kirk deViere, a Democrat from Cumberland County, voted to override the veto. Sen. Ben Clark, a Democrat who represents both Hoke and Cumberland counties, was absent.
My vote for the continued support of Senate Bull 37 was not one I took lightly, deViere said in a statement on his Twitter account. I have spoken with parents, children, educators, administrators, community leaders and colleagues on both sides of the aisle. My vote was a representation of these collective voices, not just constituents in my district but from across our state. ....

COVID-19: A time to show what LOVE looks like

COVID-19: A time to show what LOVE looks like
By Patty Collie and Crystal DePietro
You gotta love people who see a desperate need and step up to help out .
During the historic COVID-19 pandemic year of 2020, that is exactly what happened in Cumberland County! Despite the fact that COVID-19 impacted all members of our local community, people came together to give a helping hand to others in greater need than their own.
Many local families that were making ends meet pre-COVID suddenly found themselves without income. They quickly joined other families who were already experiencing homelessness.
When people look past their own crisis to give of their time and resources to improve the lives of fellow human beings, they can make big things happen: Big things like food and shelter. That is what LOVE looks like. ....

White supremacist and progressive? NC's Josephus Daniels' complex legacy

What is often left aside are the progressive battles that Daniels and his paper fought and often won in a deeply conservative state during the last century.
How could one of North Carolina’s most important political leaders be both a progressive champion for education and economic development and, at the same time, the leader of the white supremacy movement in our state? N.C. State Professor Lee Craig wrestled with this challenging question in his book, “Josephus Daniels: His Life and Times” (UNC Press, 2013).
Professor Craig struggled with this seeming contradiction: “I had to confront the fact that the most consistently progressive American political leader between the Civil War and the Cold War was also the father of Jim Crow.” ....

Four mothers: These Cumberland parents say time to re-open schools

The Fayetteville Observer
Cumberland County Schools (CCS) have not been open for in-person learning since March of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic took grip of the nation. All students have been learning remotely.
The system plans to open under Plan B a mixture of virtual and in-person learning by March 15. Some parents say that is not soon enough, especially in light of a report by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that says school reopening can be safe as long as certain conditions are met.
Following are four letters from Cumberland County parents who shared their personal stores and have one message: Open schools now. - Myron B. Pitts, Opinion editor ....
