Goleta Schools Return to In-person Instruction

The Goleta Union School District returned to in-person instruction in March on a five-day modified schedule. Now that Santa Barbara County has moved to the orange tier of California’s reopening guidelines, the district plans to have all students fully return in-person in August for the 2021-22 school year.
The school district reopened after Santa Barbara County’s COVID-19 case rate remained below 25 cases per 100,000 residents for five consecutive days. Upon opening, the district required all nine of their school sites to adhere to a strict 19:1 student to teacher ratio to accommodate for the six-feet social distancing protocol. ....

Isla Vista Youth Projects Names Four New Board Members

Kim, who works as the enterprise manager at Alpaca, brings to the board an expertise in finance, IT and accounting. Having first learned about IVYP’s after school programming, Kim said it is important for children to have a safe, responsive and reliable place to turn to.
”I decided to join IVYP because I felt that the organization has a strong vision for the future on how to serve the community, as well as a willingness to learn and adapt,” said Kim.
Robledo, a licensed clinical social worker, works as the community services program manager for Cottage Health. He learned more about IVYP through a series of community conversations led by the organization and was inspired by its mission and values. ....

Amid Uncertainty Over Return to School Campuses, United Way Serves Students in Need

For the fall semester, the United Way raised $681,000 and so far has raised another $710,000 for remote learning through April. The United Way hopes to offer the program to serve even more students through the end of the school year with additional funding. 
We are thrilled to be a part of this crucial support for youth and families during this time, said Kristina Webster, director of programs for Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara. 
Girls Inc. has space for 88 youths, including 16 spaces for seventh through 12th grades on its Goleta campus, 14 spaces for transitional kindergarten through sixth grade at its downtown location and another 58 spaces for transitional kindergarten through sixth grade at the Goleta campus. ....

Components of the project include the following in Spanish and English:
Community Health Ambassador training trusted community members are trained on the basics of COVID-19 prevention and outreach.
COVID-19 Prevention Kit Distribution for our Latino Communities distribution and education provided by trained CHAs to their friends and neighbors.
Resource Navigation and Connection assist individuals who have unaddressed basic needs to access local resources. ....

Local Past "Jeopardy!" Contestants Reflect on Alex Trebek's Legacy

Following the passing of longtime “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek in November, fans and contestants worldwide took to social media to honor Trebek’s life and legacy — including the UC Santa Barbara community. For the UCSB and Isla Vista community members who met Trebek while on “Jeopardy!,” the memories that they have shared with him will endure for a lifetime.
Lori Goodman, the executive director of Isla Vista Youth Projects (IVYP), appeared on Jeopardy in September 2018. She took first place in the contest — winning a total of $36,401, but said it was Trebek’s value in education and mentality for growth that she recalls most.  ....
