Park will be reopened on March 24 but only for weekdays.
Trails will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays, says Islamabad Wildlife Management Board.
ISLAMABAD: As coronavirus cases rise in Pakistan in general and the federal capital in particular, authorities have closed the Margalla Hills National Park for the public.
The announcement was made by the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) chairperson Rina S Khan on Twitter.
Margallah Hills National Park, which includes Trails 2,3,4,5 & 6, is now shut to the public due to the current spike in COVID-19 & the upcoming March 23rd parade, she wrote on Twitter. ....

A rundown Pakistan zoo once home to what was dubbed the “world’s loneliest elephant” and notorious for housing animals in cramped concrete enclosures has launched an ambitious $7.5 million makeover plan.
Animal rights activists had campaigned against the plight of Islamabad Zoo’s biggest attraction – a 35-year-old bull named Kaavan, the last remaining Asian elephant in the country – who had lived alone since the death of his mate eight years earlier. ....

“IT is so amazing what bees do,” said Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam at the launch of the ‘Billion Tree Honey’ programme in Islamabad recently. “Bees have evolved to become the most efficient insects to pollinate plants and, in this task, they reign supreme,” the PM’s aide went on to say.
It all started in December last year when Mr Aslam’s ministry along with representatives of the Minis­try of Science and Tech­nology and Pir Mehr Ali Shah Univer­sity of Arid Agriculture, Rawal­pindi, pitched the idea of planting bee flora to Prime Minister Imran Khan. Realising the potential of bee farming and its significance, the prime minister gave his consent and a month later, a ceremony was held to officially launch the initiative under the ‘Prime Minister’s Ten Billion Tre ....

A common leopard, which is a critically endangered species in Pakistan, was found dead in Haripur’s Margalla Hills near Khanpur on February 16 but the authorities have not been forthcoming about the case.
The news surfaced on social media and was later confirmed by the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board.
The death may have occurred due to sudden cardiac arrest or some other natural cause, said the autopsy report by Civil Veterinary Hospital Khanpur. “There were no apparent clinical signs/marks revealing the suspected attempt for unusual death,” it added. ....
