Fire money: how Indigenous land management is transforming Arnhem Land

The rains have finished in Arnhem Land. The humid, tropical air is cooling and the prevailing wind has swung to the north-east. In the Kunwinjku calendar of western Arnhem Land, it is almost Yekke, the transition from the wet to dry season, a pleasant time after months of torrential rain in a good year, or overwhelming heat in a bad year. All six Kunwinjku seasons have their highlights but Yekke is perhaps the most anticipated by Bininj. ....

Victorian Government driving innovation in healthcare with funding for world-leading Living Guidelines

Australian Living Evidence Consortium
The Australian Living Evidence Consortium (the Consortium) has welcomed the announcement that the Victorian Government will invest in the ‘Living Evidence’ model to transform the way new research is used to improve outcomes for patients in Victoria and around Australia.
Yesterday’s Victorian budget announcement included $4 million in funding for Living Evidence Phase Two, a four-year program to develop a world-leading, end-to-end evidence system to enable busy frontline clinicians to stay continually up-to-date with the latest research so they can provide the best possible care.
The Living Evidence model harnesses innovations in software, data systems, machine learning, citizen science and co-production to enable continual evidence surveillance and near real-time updating of high-quality systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines. ....

Inside John Wylie's farewell bash from the Victorian State Library

Paul Little.
Wylie told the crowd on Tuesday he was lucky to have chaired the two great meeting places in town, Melbourne Cricket Ground and the library, both places with “a sense that no one is more important than anybody else and everyone belongs. Both these places have a lot in common, they share a great sense of belonging and they share a great sense of quality.”
But with one significant difference.
“It is a bit like the difference between a Big Mac and a slow-cooked lamb. The MCG is like a juicy Big Mac, it’s instant gratification, it’s who’s going to win in the next three hours. Whereas the library, as Paul Keating said, will do you slowly, it’s a delicious slow-cooked dish.” ....

New cellular atlas maps out healthy and cancerous breast tissue
WEHI researchers have documented the diversity of cells in the human breast, explaining the relationship between healthy breast cells and breast cancer cells.
The diversity of cells in the human breast has been
documented in a new ‘RNA atlas’.
The research, which relied on expertise spanning from breast cancer biology through to bioinformatics, measured gene expression in single cells taken from healthy women and cancerous breast tissue, including tissue carrying a faulty BRCA1 gene. This enabled the researchers to create an ‘RNA atlas’ that details the different cells found in these tissues. ....
