Crystal Palace Bowl: campaign raises £29,000 in a few days

A campaign to revitalise an outdoor venue in Crystal Palace Park which held Bob Marley’s final London gig has raised nearly £30,000 in just a few days.
The Crystal Palace Bowl, established in 1961, has a long history of hosting eclectic live performances ranging from the Sex Pistols to The Proms.
Over the last decade it has remained largely unused and fallen into a state of repair, becoming known affectionately as the ‘rusty laptop.’
A community campaign is hoping to revitalise the landmark, funding a full renovation with a view to hosting events again later this year.
Val Shawcross CBE, chair of the Crystal Palace Park Trust, said: “The local community dearly want to see this iconic stage brought back into use for music, theatre, events and fun in the summer. ....

Campaign for new stage at Croydon venue where Marley played

A campaign to get a new stage installed at the Crystal Palace Bowl has begun.
The striking stage, known fondly as the ‘rusty laptop’, in Crystal Palace Park has fallen into disrepair in the past decade.
The structure was built in 1997 and replaced a previous concrete and steel stage that had been in place since the 1960s.
The concert bowl opened in June 1961, with a performance by the London Symphony Orchestra.
And in the 70s and 80s it hosted The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Elton John and Bob Marley.
This year marks the venue’s 60th birthday and the Back The Bowl campaign hopes to crowdfund £55,000 for a new stage surface to be installed to bring the venue back to life. ....

Big names call on government to adopt RetroFirst reforms
A host of big names in architecture and the built environment have called on the government to adopt the recommendations of the AJ RetroFirst campaign
A letter to the Times newspaper, published on Saturday, said the government ‘cannot ignore our wasteful addiction to demolition and rebuilding’, particularly amid preparations for the UK to host the COP26 climate summit later this year.
The letter was signed by 35 individuals including Doreen Lawrence, Norman Foster, David Chipperfield, Thomas Heatherwick, Amin Taha, Sadie Morgan and former environment secretary John Gummer.
The letter said adopting the three recommendations of the RetroFirst campaign – cutting VAT on refurbishment to 5 per cent or less; amending planning guidance and the Building Regs to promote reuse of existing buildings; and insisting all publicly funded projects look to retrofit solutions first – ‘would not only underline the UK� ....

Cyfarthfa Castle: £50m plans for renovation of Merthyr Tydfil site

Plans to renovate a historic site with a museum and public park could bring more than half a million visitors each year, a report says.
The 20-year project would see Cyfarthfa Castle in Merthyr Tydfil undergo a £50m update to celebrate the area s history.
It would include doubling the site, renovating the castle and creating an education centre.
Geraint Talfan Davies, chair the new Cyfarthfa Foundation, said it was of national as well as local importance .
The foundation has been formed to take the scheme forward.
Plans have also been submitted to the Welsh Government after being commissioned by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. ....
