Editorial: State must protect pregnant workers

A woman shouldn’t have to choose between her job and her health or the health of her unborn child.
Thirty states have laws to address this concern, requiring employers to offer pregnant workers accommodations such as additional breaks, help with manual labor and schedule modifications.
Indiana has no such law.
While many Hoosier employers do the right thing by voluntarily providing accommodations for pregnant women, others demand that pregnant employees continue to work under the same rules and conditions as other workers.
A bill that would have fixed the problem failed in the Republican-dominated state Senate in 2020. This year, two additional bills died without a hearing. Members of the GOP supermajority contend that such legislation would place an outsized burden on employers, particularly small businesses. ....

KENAI - Alaska will acquire about a half square mile of habitat along the Kasilof River through a federal grant.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approved a grant of about $340,000 for the project through its National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant program, the Peninsula Clarion reported Tuesday.
The total cost of the project is estimated at around $500,000.
The fish and wildlife service program aims to “protect, restore and enhance coastal wetland ecosystems and associated uplands” across the country.
The project will protect about .44 square miles of coastal wetland habitat in the Kasilof River Flats, including 2.25 miles of river shoreline. ....

Local Matters - Wetland causes stink in Stanmore

Wetland causes stink in Stanmore
BEFORE, 2018, Below, AFTER, 2021
A wetland created by Auckland Council three years ago on D’Oyly Reserve has fallen far short of what was promised, according to neighbours and park users, with some describing it online as “a rat-infested, weedy mess”.
By contrast, Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird, which first pushed for the creation of the wetland 10 years ago, claims it is “a major environmental success story” – a view that a number of residents agree with, saying it might not be beautiful, but it has more beneficial life in it than mown grass.
The wetland, in Stanmore Bay, is the result of Council turning a piped stream into a more environmentally sustainable wetland. Previously the reserve was mown grass that got boggy in winter when a stormwater pipe frequently overflowed. ....

It’s a frog’s life: World Frog Day heralds bumper season for local frogs
This World Frog Day (Friday March 20) it’s worth celebrating a bumper spring and summer for frogs in the Central West and Northern Tablelands.
Doctor Joanne Ocock, Project Officer with the National Parks and Wildlife Service said native frogs have a range of strategies to deal with dry and wet cycles.
“All the frogs in our area need water to lay eggs and allow tadpoles to develop into new frogs, but not all have the same strategy for surviving when the water starts to dry up. ....
