Waitangi 2021: Willie Jackson says Labour's Māori caucus bringing change

The prime minister and her Māori ministers have spent the morning speaking to iwi leaders and visiting locals in Whangārei ahead of Waitangi Day.
Willie Jackson told a crowd at the Hihiaua Cultural Centre that Labour was the only Pākehā government willing to make New Zealand history a core subject in schools.
We have got kaupapa through that you would never have thought a Pākehā government would have got through, he said. ....

Like most others, Greenpeace campaigner Steve Abel has only started reading the Climate Change Commission’s report this afternoon.
But that’s been long enough to form a view on its agricultural section.
“It’s going to sound brutal - but pretty underwhelming, to be honest,” he says. “Certainly in regard to the ag stuff it barely tinkers and has very low ambition on reducing methane emissions.”
As
reported by Marc Daalder, it will be hard for the agricultural sector to reduce methane and nitrous oxide emission to zero without reducing herds to zero, and some reductions are called for. In particular, the dairy herd is likely to shrink about 15 percent by 2030. ....

There will be a heightened sense of precaution at commemorations for Waitangi Day and the Battle of Ruapekapeka - but both events are still going ahead, despite the latest Covid case in Northland.
The recent positive Covid-19 case in the region prompted questions around whether the annual events at Waitangi - which can attract up to 30,000 people - would be called off, along with the commemorations marking 175 years since the Battle of Ruapekapeka. ....
