UConn researcher estimates 30 percent of CT is COVID immune

About 30 percent of Connecticut’s population may be immune from the coronavirus, according to one researcher.
“But that s not enough,” Pedro Mendes said.
Mendes, a researcher and professor in computational biology at UConn, has been modeling the spread of the coronavirus in Connecticut since the start of the pandemic.
As a baseline, he said 75 percent immunity is necessary to stop transmission of the virus, but that number will shift as more infectious variants take hold.
“That number depends on how infectious is the virus,” Mendes said. “With the new variant, the B.1.1.7, that number goes up, and it s probably more towards 80, 85 percent.” ....

'Solid Ground' Is Teaching Tricks Of The Trade to Farmers Old & New – NBC Connecticut


Along with her husband and two kids, Ross grows certified organic vegetables at Sweet Acre Farm in Lebanon. She saw first-hand how beneficial the UConn Extension program is and she is now a program coordinator for Solid Ground.
“A lot of first-generation farmers often don’t have or aren’t connected to all the resources they need to not only start their farms but make them sustainable,” Ross said.
Solid Ground got its start thanks to a grant through the USDA’s Beginning Farmers and Ranchers Development program. The vast majority of the courses offered are free and accessible to anyone interested in farming or people who have been in business and want to learn more. ....

The University of Connecticut will hold in-person graduations for the classes of 2021 and 2020 in May after virtual ceremonies in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic

The ceremonies this year will be at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field, held over a five-day period between May 8 and 12, and they will be livestreamed.
