Still time to donate to Christmas Fund; many people are in need

One notable comment, which came with a $500 donation: “At our ages, 91 and 87, we are very fortunate. We’re making this donation to help the many needy people during this dreadful pandemic.”
The campaign has been pushed ahead by match challenges, including 10 by Andrew Beckerman, as well as large donations from local residents, businesses and organizations such as the Victoria Foundation. By the end of business on Tuesday, we had received about 3,800 individual contributions.
The money will be used to help local organizations help people in need. The fund is run by a charitable society, which will strive to draw lasting impact from this money, change that will help our extended community in the cold, rainy months of January and February. ....

Christmas Fund reaches $827,000 and is still growing

Now, we will admit that we set the new, higher target after we reached our initial goal of $700,000 – but we are not simply going after a nice round number. We are giving extra attention to the fund this year because the need is so great.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused an immediate need. People who at one time were donors found themselves asking for help. Suddenly, to their own shock, they were joining others at food banks and other community agencies.
Since then, things have stabilized for many people, but not for all. Some retailers are doing great business, while others are suffering. Anyone working in the hospitality sector will say that conditions are the worst they have been in their lifetime – and that would not be an exaggeration. ....

Christmas Fund reaches $733,000; goal has been boosted to $1 million

That help is coming, day after day. Relief is in sight.
We have identified several community organizations, from Victoria to Campbell River, that are in helping those in need, and are stretched. We are reaching out to them today, and this weekend will start to tell their stories.
The $28,000 donated on Wednesday includes one $7,000 donation from someone who chooses to remain anonymous. There are also smaller donations, $25 and $35. Every dollar will make a difference.
The challenge from Andrew Beckerman, who said he would donate $500 if four first-time donors gave at least that much, has been met. We have the four donations, plus Beckerman’s $500, for a $2,500 boost. ....

Times Colonist Christmas Fund match challenges help put the 'fun' in fundraising

Another reason is a series of match challenges that have helped to put more fun into fundraising.
The largest challenge came from Andrew Sheret Ltd., which offered $20,000 if another company or individual would donate at least that much. Price’s Lock and Safe met the challenge.
Looking through the list of donors, it’s hard to miss the support given to the fund by local family-owned businesses such as Andrew Sheret and Price’s. Note who is here for the community in this time of need.
Some $10,000 challenges have already been completed, but two more are outstanding.
Norman Spector, who served as a deputy minister in B.C. and Ottawa, an ambassador, and a newspaper publisher, says he will match $500 donations by current or retired public servants to a maximum of $10,000. ....
