NEW YORK Twenty-time Grammy winner Al Schmitt, whose extraordinary career as a recording engineer and producer included albums by Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and many other of the top performers of the past 60 years, has died at age 91.
Schmitt’s family announced on Facebook that he died Monday, without identifying a specific cause. Schmitt lived in the Los Angeles area. A relative, who did not want to be identified, confirmed Schmitt’s death to The Associated Press. ....

Al Schmitt, who as a boy watched Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters record music in his uncle’s studio, and who went on to become a Grammy Award-winning engineer for a long roster of artists including Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles and Diana Krall, died on April 26 at his home in Bell Canyon, Calif. Although it feels touched by the sublime, Sam Cooke’s R&B banger “Twistin’ the Night Away” didn’t land onto tape itself, nor did surf band the Astronauts’ “Baja,” composer Henry Mancini’s “Theme for ‘Peter Gunn,’” songwriter Jackson Browne’s “These Days,” soft rock band Toto’s “Africa” or any of the other classic songs produced, engineered or mixed by Al Schmitt.
Schmitt, who with 23 Grammy Awards including a 2006 Recording Academy Trustees Award and two Latin Grammy trophies, holds the record for the most wins in the engineering category, died Monday at 91. His passing was announced in a Facebook statement by his family. No cause of death was given. ....
