First and foremost, BC post-punk outfit N0V3L fiercely identify as anti-capitalists. It s a personal statement that extends to the artistic intentions contained in their debut full-length record, 
NON-FICTION a functionalist, stony political excursion that parses through manifestations of injustice, inequity and broken systems.

NON-FICTION, vocalist Jon Varley has largely ditched the shrill, new-wave bravado vocal stylings that accented the group s tightly-wound 2019 self-titled EP in favour of a more brutalist, deadpan delivery. Backed by understated, sluggish basslines and frenetic, interwoven guitars, Varley s lyrics paint an extremely grey portrait of modern-day life, examining the symptoms of capitalism through the lens of Vancouver s unforgiving housing market, populism gone awry and the West Coast s opioid crisis without ever feeling too heavy-handed. ....

Imagine you are a consultant in the organisational behaviour space and you have been hired by a corporate to fix what has been described to you as a “broken HR system”. The firm has been struggling with a high staff turnover with many employees barely lasting two years.
An audit of the departing employees shows that they were making lateral moves. Internal retention panels and taskforces had come up with what was believed to be innovative incentives to retain employees but even with these, the needle barely moved. ....

Jefferson County Memorial Project's searing report on Linn Park's racial history

Birmingham’s Linn Park, from the now defunct City Stages music festival to the recently removed Confederate monument, has seen its share of city history.
The seven-acre park that separates Birmingham City Hall and the Jefferson County Courthouse in downtown also may also have been the site of the county’s first lynching, according to a local grass-roots coalition that documents racial terror.
The Jefferson County Memorial Project (JCMP), composed of over 40 community partners, researches the untold history of lynching in the county and the historical links among slavery, Jim Crow and present-day mass incarceration.
Their latest report, “Contested Terrain: A Historical Walk Through Birmingham’s Linn Park” was written by JCMP Fellows, a group of 20 college and graduate students from Birmingham-area colleges: Jefferson State Community College, Samford University, Birmingham-Southern College and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UA ....
