As vaccinations rise and public health restrictions lift, many Utahns said they're comfortable returning to the arts and entertainment activities they enjoyed before the coronavirus pandemic, including outdoor concerts and festivals.

As Utahns get vaccinated and all statewide pandemic health orders will soon lift, most say theyâre excited about returning to zoos, botanical gardens and outdoor shows. But Salt Lake County residents remain hesitant about filling seats at sports stadiums or hitting the gym.

A student at Utah's Timpview High School has designed a license plate in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

Starting this summer, Utahns will be able to pick a new license plate honoring Martin Luther King Jr.
Sen. Luz Escamilla (D-Salt Lake City), who co-sponsored a bill for the plate in the state’s 2020 legislative session, said it is the perfect time for the plate to be released because King’s message of equality and justice is needed in the United States.
“We lack tolerance,” she said. “His message needs ... to come back.”
The new plate, which features different hands joining together around a drawing of the state, was designed by 18-year-old Eleanor Smith, a senior at Timpview High School.

Statehood Day: TV special, fireworks planned across Utah on Monday for 125th anniversary

SALT LAKE CITY — At 10:03 a.m. Eastern time on Jan. 4, 1896, President Grover Cleveland signed a proclamation that declared Utah to be the country's 45th state.
A superintendent of Western Union in Salt Lake City rushed from his office and fired a pair of shots in the air to inform the community that the proclamation was signed, historian Audrey Godfrey wrote in a 1995 article about "Statehood Day" for "Utah Historical Quarterly."
"At this prearranged signal, merrymaking commenced," Godfrey wrote. "Bill Bingley and his shotgun brigade gathered near Browning Brothers store in Salt Lake, and boys blew whistles and set off 'bombs' felt blocks away. At 11:30, the NGU (National Guard of Utah) gathered on Capitol Hill at noon to fire a 21-gun salute."

SALT LAKE CITY â In a series of reports, Governor-elect Spencer Cox's transition team recommends some significant changes to state agencies.
The reports, made public on Tuesday night, are a part of a review he ordered after being elected to office. The governor-elect's transition team, made up of volunteers, reviewed each agency and made a number of staffing and policy recommendations. Some suggest consolidating state divisions and departments, as first reported by FOX 13 earlier this month, while others expand government.
