LaGrange hires a new fire chief

LAGRANGE — The LaGrange Town Board has hired a new fire chief.
The board voted Monday night to name Jeremy Edwards, a long-time member of the LaGrange Volunteer Fire Department, the department’s new chief.
Edwards replaces Dave Elick who resigned last month as fire chief after his employer made changes to Elick’s job.
Elick said those changes made it impossible for him to continue as chief.
Edwards was one of four people to apply for the position. LaGrange Town Board President Ray Hoover said the board had good interviews with all four candidates. Edwards will fill out the remaining 19 months left on Elick’s contract. At that point, the town will review his performance in the position. ....

Kendallville says no to trash service opt outs

KENDALLVILLE — Kendallville residents can’t voluntarily opt out of trash service.
That’s the call made by the city Board of Works and Public Safety after two weeks of deliberation.
Any resident with active utility service will also receive, and pay for, trash and recycling at their residence with no exceptions allowed.
“After a lot of discussion and taking everything into consideration, I just believe, we all believe, we should stay with what we have, that people pay the bill and have the service,” Mayor Suzanne Handshoe said.
Board of Works members announced the official policy on Tuesday, after receiving opt-out requests from residents during their last two meetings. ....

Kendallville to send out trash, recycling reminders

KENDALLVILLE — Many city residents are adapting to new trash and recycling service as Kendallville started citywide pickup with Noble County Disposal this year, and the city will be mailing out some additional information to help residents with the transition.
Check your utility bill next month and you should expect to see an updated front-and-back informational sheet with reminders about recycling and a “best of” Q&A tackling some of the more common questions the city has received.

INDIANAPOLIS — More than 5,700 residents in the four-county area already have received their first shots of the COVID-19 vaccine, including just over 900 who have received both shots and now are considered fully immune.

As of Friday morning, a total of 4,741 residents in the four-county area had received only the first shot of the two-shot COVID-19 vaccine regimen, according to data from the Indiana State Department of Health. There also are 981 people who have received both shots. ....
