As part of a global effort by the World Bank, the Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) program has been supporting High-Frequency Phone Surveys on COVID-19 in Ethiopia, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda to track responses to and socio-economic impacts of COVID-19. The phone surveys leverage the ongoing World Bank Living Standards Measurement Study – Integrated Surveys on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA) initiative and its infrastructure. Surveys are being conducted monthly with a national sample of households that had been interviewed during the latest round of the LSMS-ISA-supported national longitudinal household survey. ....

According to High-Frequency Phone Surveys (HFPS) conducted in 13 countries in LAC, female workers were 44 percent more likely than male workers to lose their jobs at the onset of the COVID-19 crisis.
As the crisis evolved, temporarily unemployed workers started to go back to work. But the dierence in job losses among females and males persisted.
Highly female-intensive sectors trade, personal services, education, and hospitality explain 56 percent of all job losses.
Factors associated with resilience to job losses during the crisis dier among males and females. For instance, the presence of school-age children at home is linked with a rise in job losses among females but not among males. ....

 Employment nationwide decreased by 40% in the second quarter of 2020.
Peru is one of the countries in the region most affected by the pandemic, both in terms of declines in economic activity and in terms of rates of infection and deaths from the disease. On the economic side, unemployment and informality increased significantly, wages and working conditions deteriorated, and many companies were unable to stay afloat.  All of this has been further aggravated by the political situation (three presidents in a week) and the growing division among political leaders.
But the economic symptoms that Peru is suffering from are largely the result of pre-existing conditions. For instance, informality was very high in Peru before the pandemic, and not only has it worsened after the severe quarantine was implemented earlier this year, but it also aggravated the labor market situation. ....
