ITALY The Finger Lakes Land Trust (FLLT) has purchased a small but critical parcel near the south end of Canandaigua Lake in the town of Italy. The property is located at the mouth of Clark s Gully, an iconic gorge, and is surrounded by High Tor Wildlife Management Area.
The 3.4-acre parcel features 2,200 feet of frontage on an unnamed creek that flows through the gorge, which is situated on Great Hill. Also known as Nundawao, Great Hill is of special significance to the Seneca Nation. The Seneca refer to themselves as “The People of the Great Hill, or O-non-dowa-gah, and this area is referred to as the place of their origin. ....

East Hill is practically in Rosie’s backyard (she wants you to think that, anyway). That’s where we headed this week to soak up spring after a late April snow shower hammered the Bristol Hills.
Enter at 6486 East Hill Road (off Italy Valley Road) in Naples, where a parking lot, map and trail signs point to the Finger Lakes Community College East Hill Campus. Trail access from the outdoor campus, which is used for hiking, camping, wildlife and nature classes, leads right to the state High Tor Wildlife Management Area.
Thanks to land donations from conservationist George Fraley and the Finger Lakes Land Trust, you can hike from East Hill to thousands of acres of state land. If Rosie would only pack us a lunch, we could hike from this campus all the way to the Appalachian Trail. ....

If you have a hound like Rosie at home, best leave her there if you want to get a close-up of creatures in the West River Marsh wildlife management area south of Canandaigua Lake. We pulled into the parking area on Parish Road off Route 245 along the Ontario/Yates County border to get a quick look at a family of waterfowl.
Whether they were ducks, geese or some other water-happy creature, I couldn’t tell you. Rosie went wild and these good-looking sorts took off into the wetland world safe from the likes of her. (She didn’t stand a chance; besides, it’s bears she wants). ....
