Strathclyde University is the UK participant in DEEPER (Deep Brain Photonic Tools for Cell-Type Specific Targeting of Neural Diseases), which is investigating the deep-brain alterations underlying the origin of neurological and psychiatric diseases such as dementia, depression, addiction, schizophrenia and chronic pain.
The four-year study involves 12 partners in eight countries, coordinated by Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), and has received funding of approximately €5.7m from the European Union via the Horizon 2020 programme. ....

The DEEPER project: New photonic tools to reveal deep brain alterations causing diseases

 E-Mail
Genova/Lecce (Italy), 28th January 2021 - Understanding and treating brain disorders, such as Alzheimer s disease, addiction, chronic pain, depression and schizophrenia, entails the comprehension of the alterations that may occur in the deep regions of the gray matter. Thanks to the European-funded project DEEPER, an international research consortium, coordinated by IIT-Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (Italian Institute of Technology), will develop new photonic technologies to access those regions and reveal the molecular and cellular dysfunctions underlying the origin of the disorder. The new technological tools are developed with the goal to directly treat the diseases in a minimally invasive and highly effective way. DEEPER will transfer the technological results from laboratory to market, with the ambition to have an impact to strengthen Europe s industrial position in the biophotonics market. ....

ERC awards two innovation projects for health and industrial monitoring

 E-Mail
Genova (Italy), 7 January 2021 - Two new innovation projects funded by the European Research Council (ERC) are born from frontier research on new materials and optical technologies with the aim of introducing new technologies in the field of health and in industrial and infrastructure monitoring: a nanometric sensor capable of supporting surgeons in delicate brain operations and a flexible and large-surface X-ray detector, to replace traditional photographic plates. The two projects, proposed respectively by Ferruccio Pisanello in collaboration with Massimo De Vittorio, both at the Center for Biomolecular Nanotechnologies in Lecce, and by Annamaria Petrozza of the Center for Nano Sciences and Technologies in Milan of the IIT-Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (Italian Institute of Technology), will receive from the ERC 150,000 euros for their realization. ....
