(Port Orford, Oregon) – Oregon officials have announced camping is returning to one favorite spot on the southern Oregon coast: Cape Blanco State Park. The campground will reopen on March 2 after being closed last March because of COVID-19 restrictions and the subsequent revenue losses to Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD).

Cue Micheal Jackson: 'Zombie' Whales of Oregon Coast History

Reedsport to Brookings, places to stay; winter deals
It was way back on December 1 of 1952 that a local newspaper ran the headline of “Twice Buried Whale Returns to Depoe Bay.” This was almost two decades before the infamous “Exploding Whale” in Florence, and even back in the ‘50s the thing to do was to bury the beast, which they did the first time way back in April of that year.
Adding an extra curiosity to the article is the term “excessively dead” to describe the state of this 40-foot returning cetacean, quite possibly in the same jesting manner as this article. The “mass of blubber” as they called it found its way to some beach in the Depoe Bay area, although it doesn t say which. Depoe Bay is largely rocky cliffs around for miles, so it s possible they re talking about Fogarty to the north, Lincoln Beach, Whale Cove, or maybe way down at Beverly Beach next to Devil s Punchbowl. ....

Auto Camps to Motor Lodges and Motels on Oregon Coast | History Part 2

(Oregon Coast) – When tourism first kicked into life on this coastline, it was a rough experience of primitive camping. No glitzy comforts for even this time period. No room with a view. For almost everyone, it was simple tents that you could rent: hotel rooms were rare for about the first forty years and then only for the upper class.

That encapsulates part one of this series on the rugged first three decades of Oregon coast tourism: the evolution of staying overnight on the beach from about 1880 through 1920. Part two picks up in the 1910s, when small cottages were beginning their rise on plots of land sold to the vacationing middle class. More hotels had been built along with some inns and multi-roomed lodges, and as the 1920s rol ....
