Illinois manufacturing group frustrated by law regarding pre-judgement interest

A new Illinois law that allows for plaintiffs to collect pretrial interest on money awarded in some civil suits is causing concern among manufacturers and health care providers.
Governor J.B. Pritzker signed SB72 into law last week after vetoing a previous version in March. Pritzker said he did not support a previous version of the bill because its rate of 9% interest was significantly higher than other states. The new version puts the rate at 6%.
Prejudgment interest would not apply to state and local governments, school districts, community colleges and other government entities or consumer debt, nor would it apply to settlements. ....

General Motors to Increase Production as Chip Shortage Eases

General Motors said Thursday that it expected to increase shipments of pickup trucks and other vehicles to dealers over the next several weeks, a sign that the global shortage of computer chips is beginning to ease.
G.M.’s financial results in the first half of the year would be “significantly better” than it had previously forecast, the automaker said in a statement. The company had previously indicated that its profit would fall to about $500 million in the second quarter, from more than $3 billion in the first quarter. The company had blamed the chip shortage for forcing it to idle several plants for weeks at a time. ....
