The four Island Lake First Nations have added rapid COVID-19 tests to their arsenal in the fight against the illness.
Starting Monday, the First Nations of Garden Hill, Red Sucker Lake, Wasagamack and St. Theresa Point in northeastern Manitoba will have more than 1,000 rapid COVID-19 tests available for essential travellers coming into the communities, the Four Arrows Regional Health Authority announced. ....

Shilo toy drive effort expands

A toy drive for northerners has ballooned from an effort of Canadian Forces Base Shilo to something much larger.
As reported last week, an initial group of 40 military members from the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry have been deployed to Shamattawa First Nation.
They’re set to help establish an alternative isolation area in a local school in order to help keep an outbreak of COVID-19 at bay.
As of Sunday, there were 882 active cases of the virus in the Northern health region, which makes it the second hardest-hit region when it comes to total numbers aside from Winnipeg, where there are 3,735 active cases. However, as a portion of the population, those in the north are currently twice as likely to have COVID-19 than those in Winnipeg. ....

The initiative ensuring kids in northern Manitoba receive Christmas gifts

WINNIPEG
A new initiative is aimed at making sure children in Northern Manitoba communities get Christmas gifts this year.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, several First Nations communities are in lockdown right now, which means that 4,000 kids may not get gifts this year.
Now, Indigenous Canadian Medical Dispensaries has teamed up with Indigenous leaders and military members deployed in northern communities to create the ‘Let’s Save Christmas Toy Drive.’
Donations to the toy drive will be used to buy toys for kids in remote Manitoba communities, such as Red Sucker Lake and Shamattawa, who wouldn’t otherwise be able to get them. ....
