NRL 2021: Deadly Cup, NRL NT, second annual Indigenous event a big success

The second annual Deadly Cup Carnival delivered on its promise of being bigger and deadlier when the Indigenous initiative took place in Darwin last Sunday.
NRL NT supported the Cup, which staged seven rugby league matches in various male and female age groups and attracted about 2500 spectators to Territory Rugby League Stadium.
The brainchild of Deadly Enterprises director Shaun Tatipata, the Deadly Cup was organised to celebrate NAIDOC Week while promoting positive health and wellbeing in the community.
The weekend s success followed the inaugural Cup last November.
We came up with the concept [because] we were looking to raise awareness and support for an Indigenous eye clinic that we were trying to set up, said Tatipata, a proud Wuthathi and Ngarrindjeri man with more than 20 years experience as an Aboriginal Health Worker. ....

Aboriginal organisations link up to address racism in health and justice

A coalition of Aboriginal organisations are building momentum for their initiative that advocates for victims of preventable deaths within the health and justice system.
The Partnership for Justice in Health was formed in 2017 to pursue and demand a change to the shocking mortality rates of First Nations people within the two systems. It has now launched a website and is calling for national action.
The initiative cites the death of Wiradjuri woman Naomi Williams and her unborn child at Tumut Hospital in January 2016 as a major catalyst for their push for change. A coronial inquest into Ms Williams death prompted that health district to address the levels of implicit bias and improve its representation of Indigenous workers. ....

Obese Australians are turning to fad diets and fake cures after national guidelines based on decade-old evidence expired, leaving doctors hamstrung to fight the growing epidemic.
An alliance of GPs, nurses, obesity experts and state health departments is calling for Australian governments to fill the void left by the lapsed guidelines that expired in 2018 and establish a new clinical framework.
Lyn Keppler is an advocate for clinical assessment for treating obesity.
