Sexual consent resources, The Good Society website miss the mark, lack oversight: safety advocates

Women’s advocacy groups fear a lack of transparency in the review of a federal government respectful relationships website means it will continue to promote harmful or misleading messages around sexual violence to young people.
The federal Education Department said there have been more than 298,000 visits to The Good Society website since the $3.8 million resource launched in April as part of the Respect Matters program addressing violence against women.
Women’s safety advocates pointed to a video still on The Good Society, featuring the same couple from the milkshake video, in which the woman pressures the man to watch a horror movie about clowns murdering children despite him being visibly uncomfortable.

Legal experts who spent years crafting sexual violence reforms to improve the system for victims say the problems "are just as bad as they were 15 years ago".
They have reiterated calls for specialisation when it comes to dealing with sexual assault matters in court.
The then-Labor government formed the Criminal Offences Sexual Assault Taskforce in 2004 to look at reforming the system in the face of extremely low conviction rates.

Other sexual violence experts described some material on The Good Society website as “victim-blaming and moralising”.
The package is part of the Morrison government’s Respect Matters program and is designed for prep to year 12 students. It is under fire for using “bizarre” videos about milkshakes and nachos to teach consent, not introducing the concept of sexual consent until year 10 and reinforcing gender stereotypes.
Associate Professor Ollis said she found the whole situation incredible.

“There has been no consultation with academics or practitioners in the field nationally,” she said.
“The videos that have been developed are insulting to young people ... I cannot believe an educator in the sexuality and relationships field ... developed these. They are likely to do more harm than good with unsuspecting teachers who are likely to have had no professional development.”

Grace Tame has added her voice to the calls for sexual violence law reform.
The Saturday and Sunday Telegraphs have launched a campaign - in partnership with Rape And Sexual ­Assault Research and Advocacy - calling for consent law reform, specialised sexual assault courts and an audit of relationship and sexuality education in NSW schools.
"I definitely support this; anything that's in the interest of progress of this issue is important," Ms Tame said on Saturday.
"In terms of legislation across the nation, we have eight different jurisdictions and eight different definitions of consent.
