IRS extended tax-filing deadline, but local taxes due April 15

The heat is off for preparing your Pennsylvania state tax return for another month as well. The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue also has extended its deadline until May 17.
This is a positive step that provides additional time to Pennsylvania taxpayers, many of whom have been struggling during the last year due to the pandemic, Pennsylvania Revenue Secretary Dan Hassell said.
But before you set those W-2 forms and bank records aside for a few more weeks, there are a couple of exceptions to the good news on the procrastination front.
First, estimated tax payments that are due on April 15 are still due on April 15, the IRS reports. ....

Late Filing Penalties on Local Tax Returns in Centre County Waived Through May 17

Unlike federal and state income tax returns, the deadline to file 2020 local tax returns in Pennsylvania is still scheduled for Thursday. But Centre County residents who need more time won’t need to worry about penalties for being a little late.
The Centre County Tax Collection Committee on Monday adopted a resolution to waive all penalties and interest on late income tax filings and payments through May 17, aligning with the state and federal deadlines for 2020 returns.
On March 17, the Internal Revenue Service announced that the due date for filing and payment of 2020 taxes would be extended another month “to help taxpayers navigate the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic, while also working on important tax administration responsibilities.” ....
