Indonesian island inhabitants protest against SpaceX invasion of their land

Inhabitants of a colonised Indonesian island selected for use by Elon Musk’s SpaceX venture are protesting against the billionaire’s company invading their land, reports The Guardian.
Locals of Biak island in Papua province say plans to locate the SpaceX launch pad on their land will disrupt the ecosystem, increase the military presence and cause communities to be displaced and lose their homes.
The location is ideal for launching low-orbit communication satellites because its position near the equator means using less fuel. Musk was offered use of the land by Indonesia’s president Joko Widodo in December 2020. ....

Update 2:00 p.m.: Here is what we know at this point:
Four people are dead, including the gunman who shot himself and died later at the hospital. Two of the dead where a man and women in the National Guard, who were in uniform.
There is a press conference scheduled for 3 p.m.
A few minutes before 9 a.m., a lone gunman armed with automatic AK-47-type assault rifle drives up to the IHOP on South Carson Street, and begins shooting in the parking lot. Locals BBQ owner Ralph Swagler said he saw the man drive up, and then empty a clip of ammo outside the IHOP, then reloads and goes inside, where he fires more shots very rapidly and exits within a few seconds. ....

Flocks of locals converged in Whanganui East on Sunday for one of the city s favourite annual concerts.
Cloudy weather and occasional showers didn t stop hundreds of keen locals gathering for the 13th annual Pauls Road Live music festival on Sunday afternoon.
Organiser Fred Loveridge said they dodged two bullets for the day, with New Zealand returning to Covid-19 alert level 1 to allow large gatherings from 6am Sunday, and any rough weather that would disturb the event. ....
