The Postal Service is centralizing some of its functions, and some positions are on the chopping block.

The U.S. Postal Service is consolidating its organizational structure of 67 districts down to 50, a move that will shake up and downsize the mailing agency’s workforce.
Postal management is offering voluntary early retirement to impacted staff, which includes non-bargaining unit administrative personnel at its Washington headquarters, as well as those in “headquarters-related” area and district offices. USPS said it will make the offers, which will not include a separation incentive and would become effective April 30, to avoid forced layoffs, or reductions in force. The agency said the changes would “improve efficiency” and better serve postal customers. ....

At 10:20 p.m. Monday, @Chicago Scanner, a Twitter account that posts frequent updates of police radio activity, tweeted, “Female mail carrier hanged herself in the back of the mail truck.” The tweet was in response to a question from another user, who had posted images of emergency vehicles and a mail truck outside their apartment, asking, “Have you heard anything around Belmont/Elston? This is outside of my apartment right now. There’s police tape up too and at least 5-6 cop cars.” ....

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - South Carolina officials announced the state will move to phase 1b of its vaccine distribution plan on Monday, March 8.
This will allow roughly 2.7 million people in the state to get the vaccine, officials said.
It includes teachers, essential workers, and everyone 55 and older. People at higher risk for severe COVID-19 disease because of medical conditions, or living or work conditions, are also included. ....

Local chicken farmers concerned about future USPS embargos impacting live shipment delays

STEVENSVILLE, Mont. - Local chicken farmers are scrambling to adjust plans after continued USPS mailing delays. Farmers tell us it s causing widespread business problems that could lead to less supply on grocery store shelves and less selection in restaurants.Â
A USPS embargo against shipping live animals has been lifted but one local poultry farmer said the economic damage has already been done. Inclement weather two weeks ago caused a package backlog, further delaying air shipments of chicks. Saturday they were en route once again, making their was from an Iowa hatchery to Living River Farms in Stevensville. Co-Owner Beau McLean said their plans have been hindered during hatching season and he s worried shipping delays could become a regular problem. ....
