Desmond Pickering, who played a key role in the development of special education in Victoria in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, had died aged 82.
Des – one of five children born to Eileen and Arthur Pickering – spent his early life in Victoria Street, Richmond.
As a young man, he was a well-rounded athlete who played cricket, basketball and trained with the under-19s Richmond football team. He enjoyed his time in the commando unit of the army where the physical challenges of training were to his liking as was jumping out of planes. ....

MUSCAT: Occidental of Oman, Inc (Oxy Oman) and the Association for the Welfare of the Handicapped Children (AWHC) announced the signing of a sponsorship agreement. Under this agreement, Oxy Oman will fund printing a curriculum dedicated to handicapped children. The signing ceremony was held in Muscat Hall at Oxy Oman’s Headquarters in Al Ghubra. Steve Kelly, President and General Manager of Oxy Oman and Dr Mohammed Reda Hassan Chairman of the Association were signatories for their respect organisations. The curriculum is a new imitative and is prepared and reviewed by consultants from the Omani Ministry of Education. This curriculum will be distributed to those who are in charge of teaching, rehabilitating and training children with disabilities and it will help Omani teachers create educational plans and programs for disabled children. Couple pioneered services for special needs in Grant County

At a time when children and adults with developmental disabilities were often institutionalized, Luis Morales, pictured at home last weekend, and his late wife, Ramona, along with Barbara Pendleton and the late Jewell Burk, established the Special School for Special Children at Fort Bayard. The Moraleses went on to lead two successive community organizations in southwestern New Mexico that helped children and adults with special needs integrate into their communities and live fuller lives.
A husband and wife who helped change the prevailing culture surrounding the developmentally disabled population in southwest New Mexico were recognized this month by Grant County commissioners, who officially proclaimed their “appreciation of the achievements of Luis and Ramona Morales” on April 8. ....
