Q: What is “long-haul COVID”?

But there is growing evidence that some people experience long-term symptoms even after they recover. These symptoms can last for weeks or even months after the initial COVID-19 infection.
According to the CDC, some common symptoms of “long-haul COVID” can include fatigue, shortness of breath, cough, joint pain and chest pain. Others have reported long-term symptoms including “brain fog,” depression, persistent muscle pain, headache, intermittent fever and a racing heartbeat.
While less common, some people have reported more serious long-term complications from COVID-19, including inflammation of the heart, persistent problems with lung function, kidney damage, skin rashes, hair loss, ongoing loss of taste and smell, memory problems, anxiety and mood changes. ....

Chrissy Miller, Employee Health Manager, Maui Health: Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration formally granted an emergency use authorization (EUA) for Pfizer-BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine candidate, which means that they reviewed and evaluated the vaccine’s risks and benefits (as they do with all vaccines) and granted the EUA based on the need to use the vaccine to quickly save lives during an urgent health crisis.
Many people are anxious about the speed with which a vaccine has been approved. While the EUA is a shorter process, no steps are skipped in the safety evaluation process. Safety is the most important requirement for the vaccine and is assessed in trials by independent experts. ....
