Oh baby: Maternity services throughout the decades

At 27 weeks pregnant, my attention has swiftly been turned to all things baby. More importantly what to expect when D-Day finally arrives and the little one (yes, thankfully just the one…) decides to make their long awaited appearance.
As a first-time mum, now I know what the maternity unit looks like these days, and the staff teams that work in them, thanks to my many routine appointments over the months.
It got me thinking – what was bringing a new life in to the world like in the past? ....

Vaccine rollout begins as Sligo records 742 cases in just two weeks

As the county has now recorded 1,600 cases of Covid-19, and there are 36 people in hospital with the virus, the next number of weeks could see the worst of the deadly virus capabilities being realised.
Sligo University Hospital is said to be under severe pressure with the number of positive cases attending and also with staff numbers struck by the virus.
Of the 1,600 cases in the county, worryingly 742 of those were recorded in the 14 days from December 27th to January 9th,
That figure makes up over 46% of the total cases recorded for the county since the pandemic began, showing the impact Christmas had on the spread and exponential growth of the virus within the county. ....

The roll-out of the COVID 19 vaccination campaign began in Sligo University Hospital today, Wednesday, January 6th. Mary Meade was the first staff member in the hospital to receive the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine. Mary received the vaccine from her nursing colleague Catherine Greaney (Glancy) from Leitrim Village.
The vaccine was the first to be administered in County Sligo and over the coming weeks the vaccination programme will be extended across the hospital and community services. Between today and the end of this week, over 500 staff will be vaccinated at Sligo University Hospital. ....
