Oldest known pet cemetery found in Egypt


Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities said archaeologists excavated the mummy in Saqqara, a town south of Cairo. The Ministry of Antiquities is planning to announce additional details about the discovery at the end of the month. An excavation of hundreds of animal remains at a site along Egypt’s Red Sea coast has revealed the world’s oldest pet cemetery, according to a report.
The nearly 2,000-year-old burial ground at the Berenice port in southern Egypt, held the complete remains of more than 500 cats, nearly three dozen dogs, 15 monkeys, a fox and a falcon, Live Science reported. ....

An ancient Egyptian papyrus version of Mummification for Dummies has been revealed by a Danish Egyptologist as the oldest how-to guide yet found.
The detailed instructions on the circa 3,500-year-old item adds details to the only two other guides known and predates them by more than 1,000 years. The papyrus is more than 19 feet long, according to a release from the University of Copenhagen. 
Known as the Papyrus Louvre-Carlsberg manuscript, the papyrus had been split in two, with one piece at the Louvre Museum in Paris and the other in the University of Copenhagen’s Papyrus Carlsberg Collection. ....

There s something about mummies that always fascinates people. We see this from the attention given to mummies in museum exhibitions and in their frequent appearance in books, films and games.
 
Perhaps it s the fact that they are dead yet still very identifiable as people – in some way simultaneously dead and living. Whatever the reason, it s always exciting when a study reveals new information about mummified remains.
