Stock markets rise, US dollar dips
In a flashback to the future, US markets fully returned to work overnight and partied like it was 2020. Stock markets powered higher; the US dollar fell at the expense of risk-correlated currencies, US yields eased slightly, and industrial metals rose. Gold and cryptos both had positive days with only oil suffering, which we will discuss later.
There seems to have been a delayed reaction to Friday’s impressive Non-Farm Payrolls. The whole buy everything process being given another sugar rush by the US ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI blowing forecasts out of the water. Markit Services PMI had outperformed as it rose to 60.40, but the ISM data stole the show. Non-Manufacturing PMI for March rose to 63.70 versus 59.0 expected, as the US reaps the Covid-19 jabs in arms, stimulus cheques peace dividend faster than expected. ....

Oil rebounds on weaker dollar, strong data
Oil prices are rebounding firmly, paring steep losses from the previous session thanks to a weaker US dollar and rising optimism surrounding the global economic recovery.
Strong data from China overnight is supporting oil’s move higher. Caixin service sector PMI data revealed that activity in China’s services expanded at the fastest pace in three months in March, and optimism within companies surged to a 10-year peak. The Caixin services PMI came in at 54.3 in March, ahead of the 51.7 forecast.
The data follows impressive non-farm payroll figures on Friday. Oil bulls are cheering a solid economic recovery in the US and China, the world’s largest oil consumers. ....

Asian equities muted in holiday trade
Asia is treading cautiously this morning despite the blowout US Non-Farm Payrolls data on Friday pushing Wall Street to an impressive finish. Greater China, Australia, Europe and Canada, to name but a few, are on holiday today, and volumes are likely to be muted as a result.
Friday’s session was notable for what did not happen, then what did. The US Non-Farm Payrolls rose by 916,000 jobs, far higher than expected and broad-based across sectors. Going forward, we can expect one million-plus prints if the US vaccination efforts stay on track. US equities rose, but the rally was predominantly in the Nasdaq and not the Dow Jones. Longer-end bond yields actually fell, notably the 30-year. That dragged the US dollar lower and lifted gold impressively for the second day in a row. ....
