Short squeeze sends US dollar higher - MarketPulse

Short squeeze sends US dollar higher
February 5, 2021SharePrint
US dollar boosted by yield curve steepening
The rise in the US 30-year yields overnight gave the dollar short-squeeze renewed momentum. The dollar index rose by 0.40% to 91.50, lifting it well clear of support at 91.00. The euro and yen were notable index component casualties. EUR/USD has fallen 0.60% to 1.1955, its 100-day moving average (DMA), and well clear of resistance at 1.2055. A fall through 1.1900 potentially targets 1.1600 over the coming weeks.
USD/JPY has risen 0.53% overnight to its 200-day moving average (DMA) at 105.60. A daily close above the 200-DMA signal more gains targeting 107.00 initially as short dollar positioning globally, gets squeezed. Both the cyclical Australian and New Zealand dollars are flirting with support in Asia this morning, setting both up for potentially 300 point moves lower next week. USD/CAD is testing resistance at 1.2825 today, and it could rally to 1.3000 ea ....

US dollar retreats on stimulus hopes - MarketPulse

US dollar retreats on stimulus hopes
January 22, 2021SharePrint
The dollar wilts before the stimulus trade
The US dollar index retreated overnight as markets continued to rotate out of US dollars and into global recovery facing commodity and Asian currencies. The dollar index fell 0.40% to 90.04, leaving it squarely in the middle of its 89.00 to 91.00 two-month range. The euro was unmoved by an unchanged ECB and continues to range trade, awaiting its next directional move. Sterling rose 0.60%, closing just above major resistance at 1.3700 after its vaccination programme’s momentum increased. Sterling is now poised to target 1.3800 and could well receive a Covid-19 “peace dividend” over the coming weeks thanks to its impressive vaccination efforts. ....

Deficits be damned - MarketPulse

Deficits be damned
Yellen to call for more stimulus to bolster economy
The Financial Times reports that Treasury Secretary Nominee Janet Yellen, the Federal Reserve’s former head, will state that the US risks a more prolonged recession and long-term scarring if it does not inject more government spending into the economy. The prepared remarks obtained by the FT ahead of Ms Yellen’s testimony today outlined that Ms Yellen feels that with interest rates at historical lows, now was the time to “act big,” with the benefits outweighing the challenges of a larger deficit.
With US markets mostly closed for a public holiday, Asian markets appear to have seized on Ms Yellen’s remarks as further vindication for President-elect Biden’s USD1.90 trillion stimulus package. And as we know from 2020, any mention of stimulus is usually good for asset prices. That seems to be the case in Asia, with most equity markets across the region opening up much stronger. ....

Canadian dollar starts week with slide - MarketPulse

Canadian dollar starts week with slide
January 11, 2021SharePrint
The Canadian dollar is deep in red territory in the Monday session. Currently, USD/CAD is trading at 1.2767, up 0.63% on the day. On the fundamental front, it’s a quiet start to the week, with no economic data out of the US or Canada. The Bank of Canada released its Business Outlook survey, which is released on a quarterly basis.
US dollar rebounds
The US dollar is showing some newfound strength and this has continued on Monday, with the Canadian dollar down sharply. This is largely a result of higher US Treasury yields, which has resulted in a US dollar short squeeze and pushed the currency to higher levels. The US dollar index continues to move higher and reached a daily high of 90.71. The dollar index is putting pressure on a major resistance line at 91.00; a daily close above that line would likely extend the dollar short squeeze. With US yields continuing to move higher, investors have been in ....
