WHOI underwater robot to provide rapid response to environmental disaster

In 2010, when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig spilled 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico becoming the largest marine oil spill in history scientists and first responders wondered how far the spill went, how much was leaking out and how to minimize the damage.
A torpedo-shaped robot created by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute will be able to answer those types of questions, helping to quickly mitigate the damage from future oil spills.
“If there was an oil spill tomorrow, we’re ready,” said Amy Kukulya, a research engineer and principal investigator at WHOI in charge of the Scibotics Lab. ....
