Mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, is a rare but dangerous infection. It is being increasingly seen in vulnerable patients in India, including those with COVID-19, as the country continues to struggle in the pandemic. Usually very rare, mucormycosis has a high mortality rate and is difficult to treat. The US Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates mucormycosis with an overall all-cause mortality rate of 54%.
Mucormycosis is affecting COVID-19 patients more due to prolonged administration of steroids and subsequent immunocompromised state. People with diabetes, on steroids and humidified oxygen for a long time, and COVID-19 patients with pre-existing comorbidities are the most at risk. ....

The ICMR has warned that Covid patients who have uncontrolled diabetes and are on steroids that suppress the body’s immunity or have had a prolonged stay in the ICU must beware of black fungal infection (mucormycosis). They are predisposed to catching the infection as their ability to fight germs like this fungal pathogen (mucormycetes), found in the environment, is compromised. It is important to seek immediate medical help because if left uncared, the disease can lead to loss of vision; the treatment may eventually require surgery for the removal of nose, eye or jaw and it may even be fatal. The US Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention estimates mucormycosis with an overall mortality rate of 54 per cent. The government has done well to caution the Covid-battered public. It must also scale up infrastructure to treat the victims. ....
