Leaders of a local townsmen’s organisation have called on Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor to grant them seats on a committee that will enjoy broad powers to influence the city’s politics under a Beijing-decreed overhaul.
In a letter sent to Lam last week, the Federation of Hong Kong Chiu Chow Community Organisations expressed disappointment with the government’s decision to exclude it from the newly expanded 1,500-member Election Committee despite the contributions of community members to the city, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.
The document gave a hint of possible internal wrangling in the pro-establishment camp in its bid for political power under the new electoral system, even though Beijing had set aside a majority of seats in the committee for its supporters. ....

Hong Kong, April 2 (ANI): Some pro-Beijing lawmakers in Hong Kong have joined political rivals in a rare show of unity to warn against possible abuse of a proposed bill that seeks to ensure the allegiance of public office holders.
According to South China Morning Post (SCMP), the concerns were raised as legislators met on Thursday to examine the draft legislation, formally called the Public Offices (Candidacy and Taking Up Offices) (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill 2021, which mainly seeks to extend current requirements of a loyalty pledge from government officials and lawmakers to include members of the city s 18 district councils. ....

HONG KONG, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government on Friday published an amendment bill in the Gazette that requires District Council (DC) members to take oaths when taking office.
DC members should comply with the same oath-taking requirements of swearing to uphold the HKSAR Basic Law and bear allegiance to the HKSAR as other public officers, according to the Public Offices (Candidacy and Taking Up Offices) (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill 2021.
Previously, the HKSAR chief executive, principal officials of the government, members of the Executive Council and of the Legislative Council, judges of the courts at all levels and other members of the judiciary are required to take oaths, which are written into Article 104 of the Basic Law. ....
