NEW signage has finally arrived in Ilkley’s riverside parks. They were supposed to be installed in April last year, along with news paths and ramps, but were delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Chairman of the Friends of Ilkley Riverside Parks (FOIRP) Ed Duguid said: “We are really pleased that most of the new signage has finally arrived in the Parks. The contract for the signage was bound up with the construction of the new disabled access path in Riverside Gardens, along with the renewal of the entrance ramps and fencing at East and West Holme Fields. The contractors managed to complete the ramps and fencing last year which made access much safer to those areas, before a delay ensued over whether there might be Roman ruins below the proposed route of the new path in Riverside Gardens. A stop was ordered by Historic England before an Archaeologist was appointed to supervise the works. After some site investigation the go-ahead was finally given. It took a year to ....
VOLUNTEERS have completed a makeover of the memorial area in Ilkley Riverside Gardens. There are now flowerbeds in the area, the overlooking platform and the Bridge Street entrance. They contain a wide variety of shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses. “It’s been really hard work but we got there in the end,” said Ed Duguid, chairman of the Friends of Ilkley Riverside Parks (FOIRP). “It was a real team effort and an example of different groups and organisations working together for the benefit of the community as a whole.” FOIRP has been supported by a group of local landscape gardeners led by Helen Taylor, who have all donated their time and expertise for free. They are: Ian Campbell, Patrick Campbell, Linda Taylor, Rachel Forbes, Joanne Hartley, Anne Eldred, Isabel Almond and James Cooper. ....
THE Friends of Ilkley Riverside Parks are partnering with The 2 Minute Foundation, a registered charity dedicated to encouraging people to do a small amount of litter picking when they are out walking. The concept originated on the beaches of Britain and is now spreading to other areas, such as canals and parks. Jo Moseley, who paddle boarded around the coast of the England to raise funds for the Foundation, very kindly agreed to support the cost of a Litter Station in the Riverside Gardens from the funds she raised from her exploits. “We saw the impact the movement was having on keeping our beaches clean and were keen to see if we could replicate this in our parks here in Ilkley,” she said. ....
THE Friends of Ilkley Riverside Parks (FOIRP) have started work on creating new flowerbeds at the Riverside Garden’s Memorial area to boost visitors’ wellbeing following the easing of lockdown. “We are aware it’s been a tough time for everyone during the pandemic and we felt it would be great to put a smile back on people’s faces and to create a beautiful area for contemplation and enjoyment around the War Memorial at Riverside Gardens,” said Ed Duguid, Chairman of the Friends. “We have extensive plans to improve the whole of the embankment area surrounding the Memorial. However, phase 1 is to focus on the immediate area around the memorial itself, and we are pleased the Council has given us permission to proceed with the first part of our plan. Hopefully, those who have been watching our work will now know where we are focusing our efforts.” ....
