Ultralow-velocity zones (ULVZ) are patches of molten rock at the core-mantle boundary in which passing seismic waves slow significantly. Such patches may fuel plumes of hot rock that rise through the mantle to feed some volcanic hot spots, such as those beneath Hawaii and Iceland. Home to more than 30 active volcanoes, Iceland is one of the most vigorous volcanic settings on Earth. A new look at the core-mantle boundary thousands of kilometers below the island is offering one of the most complete pictures yet of how Iceland’s volcanoes are fueled. ....

Earth Contains Buried Chunks Of Alien World ‘millions Of Times Larger Than Everest : Study
Arizona State University scientists detected huge blobs of rock, metal and ancient fragments underneath Earth “millions of times larger than Mount Everest.
Scientists have discovered debris of an ancient protoplanet called Theia that likely crashed into the Earth some 4.5 billion years ago. The crash generated shrapnel into space that likely led to the formation Moon. Arizona State University scientists have now found huge blobs of rock and metal, and ancient fragments which they described were “millions of times larger than Mount Everest in terms of volume . In new research published in the journal Nature on April 3, scientists revealed that pieces 621 miles tall and two to three times as wide, interpreted as subducted slabs, were discovered in southern Asia and the circum-Pacific s lower mantle transition zone. Researchers employed the complex global m ....
