Grazing livestock could reduce greenhouse gases in atmosphere, study shows
An innovative approach to livestock grazing could help eliminate climate change-causing greenhouse gases, according to a new study by University of Alberta biologists.
The research shows that a strategy called adaptive multi-paddock (AMP) grazing extracts methane gas from the atmosphere, locking it inside the soil through microbial activity. Methane gas has a climate warming effect that is 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 100-year time frame.
“Grasslands are the most endangered ecosystem type worldwide because of agricultural development and tillage,” said Mark Boyce, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and supervising author on the project. ....

Livestock's role in a changing climate | Successful Farming

The grazing of livestock stores carbon in the soil.

Edward Bork’s research surrounding how livestock grazing affects soil carbon has made him a believer in the beneficial role cattle can potentially play in a changing climate.
“Because their grazing contributes to the concentration of carbon in the soil – a helpful process – livestock can be a tool to help reduce atmospheric carbon and thus mitigate climate change,” says Bork, director of the Rangeland Research Institute, University of Alberta.
Cattle critics say otherwise, calling for decreases in numbers or even elimination of ruminants as a means of reducing the greenhouse gases contributing to climate change. They point to the methane cattle emit as a key polluter of the atmosphere. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that ruminants put out as part of their digestive process. ....

How an anti-mask firebrand fans the right's flames against Dan Andrews online

Last modified on Tue 19 Jan 2021 06.02 EST
After she failed to find fame as a Survivor contestant in 2017, Monica Smit has found another high-profile career: as a firebrand of the anti-mask-wearing movement and a ferocious critic of the Victorian premier, Dan Andrews.
According to her website, Reignite Democracy Australia (RDA), the 31-year-old Smit was motivated by her personal outrage at restrictions imposed by Andrews in July as the Covid-19 infections surged in the state. But there is much more to Reignite Democracy and Smit than meets the eye – and certainly more than is disclosed on the site.
In 2017 Smit was selling project home designs. In late 2019 she restyled herself as a hobby journalist and by mid-2020 had become an activist and wannabe YouTube celebrity. ....
